PGA Tour's 2028 Restructure: What You Need to Know

The PGA Tour officially approved a sweeping overhaul of its competitive structure on June 23, 2026, with the new two-track model set to launch in 2028. The announcement was made at TPC River Highlands during the Travelers Championship by Tour CEO Brian Rolapp.

Championship Series: The Premier Track

The top tier, the Championship Series, will feature up to 24 events per season running from approximately February through August. This includes 16 signature events, The Players Championship, all four major championships, season-ending events, and either the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup.

Each signature event will be a 72-hole stroke-play format with fields of roughly 120 players, cuts to the top 65 and ties, and minimum purses of $20 million. No sponsor exemptions will be granted. The top 90 players in the points standings retain their Championship Series membership the following season, with an additional 20 promoted annually from the Challenger Series.

Challenger Series: The Proving Ground

The secondary track will consist of at least 20 tournaments with purses starting at $4 million. Fields of 144 players—including amateurs—will compete in 72-hole events with identical cut rules. The standout feature: two victories earns immediate promotion to the Championship Series mid-season. A fall "last chance" series of four to six events will also be available for players facing relegation.

Key Voices on the Changes

Tiger Woods, who chaired the Future Competition Committee, framed the restructuring as a long-term investment in the sport's growth. Rory McIlroy, initially skeptical—calling the secondary track a "glorified Korn Ferry"—shifted his stance after the full details emerged, describing the changes as "a positive step."

The Tour Championship will remain at East Lake through 2027, then rotate to historic venues like Pine Valley, Cypress Point, and Seminole Golf Club.

Strokeslab Perspective

With Championship Series fields consistently comprising around 120 elite players each week, the reliability of SG comparisons across the season will improve meaningfully—making week-to-week performance analysis sharper than ever.

💬Strokeslab コメント

Consistent 120-player elite fields across the Championship Series will make season-long SG comparisons far more reliable—a structural shift that's as significant for golf analytics as it is for competition.
