PGA Tour Announces Structural Overhaul for 2028

The PGA Tour unveiled sweeping competitive changes at TPC River Highlands on June 24, 2026, set to take effect in the 2028 season. Under CEO Brian Rolapp — who joined the tour less than a year ago from the NFL — the revamped model introduces a two-tier circuit, promotion and relegation, and a match play postseason.

Championship Series vs. Challenger Series

The new structure splits the tour into two tracks. The Championship Series features 15 events with purses around $20 million, 36-hole cuts, and no sponsor exemptions, alternate lists, or Monday qualifying. The Challenger Series ($4 million purses) serves as the lower tier, where players compete for promotion — echoing European soccer's relegation model.

Match Play Postseason

After up to 24 regular-season events using uniform points distribution, top players will advance to a match play finale at "prestigious venues the PGA Tour has never visited." Pebble Beach has been floated as a potential early candidate.

International Fall Schedule

A fall series co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour will provide additional playing opportunities, including potentially the Irish Open, Australian Open, and Dunhill Links at St. Andrews.
