GOLF.com: Svensson's Ball-Marker Confusion Costs Him U.S. Open Alternate Spot in Toronto Qualifier
A Costly Rules Misread at the Worst Possible Moment
The 2026 U.S. Open Final Qualifying, known as "Golf's Longest Day," unfolded across 10 sites worldwide on June 9. At Lambton Golf & Country Club in Toronto, six spots at Shinnecock Hills were up for grabs over a grueling 36-hole day.
Emiliano Grillo, Alejandro Tosti, and Marcelo Rozo secured the top three spots, leaving eight players to contest the remaining three via sudden-death playoff.
How the Playoff Unfolded
William Mouw birdied the first hole to claim the fourth spot, while Max Homa and one other made bogey to exit. On the next hole, John Parry grabbed the fifth spot and another player fell away — leaving Adam Svensson, Matt Wallace, and Max McGreevy to fight for the last U.S. Open berth, plus the all-important first alternate position.
After Wallace made par, Svensson marked his ball to allow McGreevy to putt first. McGreevy holed a birdie to claim the sixth and final spot. In that moment, Svensson assumed the playoff was over — and picked up his ball marker.
The Blunder
It wasn't over. Svensson still needed to hole his par putt to remain in contention for the first alternate position. By lifting his marker prematurely, he effectively conceded the hole, handing Wallace first alternate status.
Golf Channel analyst Brendon de Jonge noted: "It's a big mistake made there by Adam Svensson, and unfortunately at the end of a long day you can make these types of errors."
Strokeslab Take
This was not a swing error or a missed putt — it was a mental breakdown under extreme pressure, a stark reminder that rules awareness is as critical as ball-striking when a U.S. Open spot is on the line.
No Strokes Gained metric captures the cost of a rules misread — this incident underscores that mental composure and situational awareness under playoff pressure are just as decisive as shotmaking at the highest level.
